Lady Warriors Win In First NLC Showdown

It’s been almost a decade since the Wawasee girls tennis team secured an NLC victory, but the wait has ended.  The Lady Warriors defeated Goshen Thursday night 3-2 behind much improved doubles performances from #1 Charity Parker and Kabrea Rostochak and #2 Madison Cooper and Brooke Fick. Both doubles teams won in straight sets with identical scores 6-4, 6-1.

A #3 singles victory from Meg Heinisch sealed the victory as she won a tough first set tiebreaker and then won the second set 6-2.

There are many signs that tennis at Wawasee is coming back.  Will the rebuild bring the school back to being competitive in their conference? Coach Staley addressed this after the night’s victory.

I’m definitely proud of this team and happy for the victory. There’s definitely a culture change happening here, and I think this is an early stepping stone to the path we’ll be on in the coming years.

He went on to say:

This team has done something truly special, something that hasn’t been done in quite some time at this school.  So in building a program, I love to see my team get a taste of victory in a good conference.  They deserve it, they’ve worked hard and they’re a great group of girls from top seed through JV.

And speaking of JV, the squad also won 6-3, winning 4 out of 5 doubles matches.  Winners included #1 Courtney Larson & Kendra Doerr, #2 Taylor Mock and Janae Hapner, #4 Lesley Tayagua & Ashlie Hemphill, and #5 Kaitlin Graber & Anah Sommers.  Singles winners included Brianna Haessig and Aom.
