Lady Warriors Take 2016 Season Opener

The 2016 girls tennis season officially opened Tuesday with the Lady Warriors traveling to Lakeland for a non-conference match.  Last year’s match was a close one with Wawasee barely escaping with a 3-2 varsity victory and a JV split.  This year, the opener was much brighter for the Lady Warriors.

In varsity action, all 3 singles matches were won in straight sets.  Freshmen Peyton Rookstool led the way at #1 singles winning 6-1, 6-3.  Freshmen #2 singles player Meg Heinisch labored through her match but won 7-5, 7-5.  Sophomore Kabrea Rostochak scored her first singles victory of her career winning decisively 6-2, 6-3.

The fourth victory at varsity was by seniors Madison Cooper and Brooke Fick who played #2 doubles, winning by the score 6-1, 6-2.

JV won 6 of the 7 matches to begin their season.  Winning at singles was #1 Brianna Haessig and #3 Brittney Jackson who earned a hard-fought victory in a tiebreaker.

JV doubles swept their matches, winning all 4, including #1 Courtney Larson and Taylor Mock, #2 Diki Gomez and Riley Kunkle, #3 Janae Hapner and Lesley Tayagua and #4 Kaitlin Graber and Anah Sommers.

“This was a great start to the season,” Coach Staley said after the Lakeland match, “and it was nice to get a win with a very inexperienced squad this year, most of who are playing in their first match ever.”

In fact, 11 of the 18 who played against Lakeland were playing in their very first high school match.  Also, the Lady Warriors were missing 3 key returners from last year including this year’s #1 varsity singles player Jazlyn Gehlhausen, the #1 JV singles player Lauren Horn and the #2 JV singles player Madison Rhodes.
