Wawasee Girls Fall Short On Home Opener

Spring tennis kicked off in Syracuse Tuesday with Westview coming to town to face the Lady Warriors.  Last year’s meeting with Westview found Wawasee getting hammered during competition.  Although this year’s score was similar, the story was quite different.

The Lady Warriors had jumped out to early leads on 4 of the 5 varsity courts.  To spectators, it looked like Wawasee was going to win in impressive fashion, but Westview fought back against the young Lady Warrior squad, taking 4 out of 5 matches.

Freshmen Kendra Doerr secured the sole victory for Wawasee winning 6-2, 6-2.

In a post-match interview, Head Coach Shane Staley commented about the night’s collapse.

Overall, I was happy that we remained competitive throughout the match.  They fought hard and I feel there were two other matches that we should’ve won, but came up short. We have the talent, but finishing off crucial points to win key games really highlighted the girls’ lack of experience.  It’ll come.

Staley in his second year of rebuilding Wawasee’s girls program has started three different freshmen singles players in his top-3 varsity in the first two matches. All three have now won at least one match. When asked about his timetable for seeing results, he commented:

It’s building. One thing I love is that we have hard-working freshmen, strong senior leadership and also some really good athletes in the mix as well. Most of these girls walk into day-one of my program and they have zero experience in tennis.  So they need to get more matchplay and practice repetitions.  Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, and tonight was tough but necessary.

Another highlight for the Lady Warriors is that they took 2 singles victories at the JV level in Tuesday’s contest.  Last year, JV was shut out.  Madison Rhodes at #2 singles won a close match at 8-6 and #3 singles Brianna Haessig won 8-4.

Wawasee heads back to Central Noble today (4/13/16) in a make-up match from a weather-shortened dual on 3/31/16.
